Marvel Legends Fox X-Men Mystique review

I liked Mystique in the X-Men films, especially when she was in a role where she could be a deceptive figure in the older films compared to the newer films where they made the character try to be a little more sympathetic for the audience (which worked well for First Class and Days of Future Past, but it got old in Apocalypse and the character felt like an afterthought in Dark Phoenix). Still, Mystique being a scaley nudist in the films works well, though people should know that she has no nipples, vagina, or prominent butt crack. That detail aside, I should sum up that I prefer the old Mystique over the new one. Now let's get to the figure.

Here is Mystique in-hand, capturing her skin quite well than I initially imagined. I say that because some people may have been worried that there'd be some paint discrepancies because of how intricate the paint details would be. Thankfully, it's done well nicely on my copy, and the transition from the normal blue skin to the darker scales on her body flow nicely. The anatomy looks quite good in my opinion; female figures tend to suffer from looking too skinny or having thicker hips and bigger chests to compensate, but Mystique works well. Maybe the legs are just slightly wonky, but she looks good regardless.

Head sculpt is accurate to how she appeared in the movie, though sometimes I see it as an amalgamation of her appearances in the original X-Men trilogy and the prequel trilogy that began with First Class. Like she's weirdly got that sinister look to her character from Rebecca Monijn while also having a slight look of sympathy from the Jessica Laurence version. At least she has none of the shitty makeup from Dark Phoenix. I also like how her hair turned out with the paint applied. The articulation she has is the same found on female Legends, meaning she has a diaphragm joint and has an elbow that swivels on top of being able to hinge. The Lightning Collection female Power Rangers had similar articulation yet had butterfly joints and ab-crunches. Maybe the articulation wasn't there because it'd compromise the sculpting of the body, which would look even less naturalistic than it already is on a female body. Aside from having a pair of fists (which she's seen with one on the third pic), she has an alternate human arm, likely representing the time she lost her mutant powers and resulted in actually being naked in The Last Stand...what are the chances some kids who saw that movie realized they no longer wanted Lego sets the moment they saw her back in 2006?

Here she is next to Wolverine, who is a bit shorter than he is yet it makes sense given their heights in the actual movie and IRL. It's kind of crazy to have X-Men Legends from the Fox movies, especially when Disney Marvel kept telling Hasbro to not make figures tying in with their movies (something I always hated because if Spider-Man can get at least two figures from TASM2, why can't DOFP or Apocalypse have gotten them?). Thankfully, we have two characters based on the older movies, and now I can't wait to get Prof. X, Magneto, and the Deadpool movie characters. I'd also like to get Cyclops, Jean Gray, Storm, Colossus, Nightcrawler, Beast, Sabertooth, Toad, Juggernaut, some Sentinels, and maybe Apocalypse (even if his design is not too great). As for Mystique herself, she is pretty good for what she is, though a little lacking compared to the other female characters I got in the Lightning Collection. Yeah, there's so much that can be done with her, but I wish he had a few more alternate parts, like another head or maybe a display base? Either way, you can get her with no problem and maybe at a discount at any stores that still have her.
