Figma Urusei Yatsura Lum-Chan review

The classic invader, Lum-Chan, is considered by many to be the first-ever waifu in Japanese animation history. Her signature tiger-stripe top, bikini bottom, and boots, combined with her teal hair, make for these factors, on top of her more whimsical personality, made her a popular character when the Urusei Yatsura series made its debut in 1981 when she tried to have the unfaithful Ataru Moroboshi stay with her as a future husband while she nicknamed him "Darling". It's a simple plot, but it at least knew how to be comedic, which I believe the reboot continued with said quality rather than falling victim to the same trope of "humor" current anime possess. Those Japanese kanji/otomatopea stand out like the MMPR 2010 revision edits, though... Anyway, Lum takes the spotlight for today's review!

Here we have Lum-Chan in-hand, and yes, she is almost naked in the review setting compared to, say, Slave Leia. Her bra, bikini, and boots all have the signature tiger pattern that weirdly go well with the teal hair; said attire is also sculpted either raised in relief or molded separately and glued onto the bare skin, which is something I appreciate as it means her modesty won't easily be compromised like in the beginning when Ataru stole her top. Now being someone who is not a degenerate that tweets about how they want to fuck anime characters, I will focus on how organic the anatomy manages to remain as an action figure. Normally, it isn't easy to maintain the curvature of the female body in plastic compared to the males, as we have seen in the Marvel Legends side of things from Toy Biz and early Hasbro, leading to either fewer points of articulation to maintain the anatomy or over-articulated joints that compromise how the proportions work, as we have seen with the T-jointed hips from the female buck used on Black Cat, Elektra, and Mystique by Toy Biz or the reduced articulation that Hasbro gave to their female Legends. GoodSmile was at least able to maintain the anatomy by not making the joints too obvious, which is something that Lum benefits from if you are not going to dress her up in her attire from the series. The upper body doesn't feel disconnected from the stomach region, the hips don't look too separate from the waist, and the elbows as well as the knees don't look too toyish. I have a feeling the sculpt would be compromised somewhat if Hasbro or Mattel did this sculpt, and I know McFarlane has more interest in My Hero Academia or Demon Slayer than he does with Urusei Yatsura. So overall, this Figma does a good job with the anatomy as well as making the skin look naturalistic, though she does feel a tiny bit waxy (shut your ass up and get your head out of the gutter). There is a hole in the back (not that kind of hole, perv fucks), which does disrupt the sculptwork of the skin, though it comes into play later.

Head sculpt has a much simpler level of surface area for the hair, and the same sound be said for the facial proportions, making her appear a bit softer than the norm when put next to her animation models where the nose was a little more prominent. At the very least, the eyes do look fairly accurate, and she has an amusingly tiny mouth. And before we get to her articulation, the accessories she comes with are two alternate faceplates (one staring at the side with an open mouth, another with a raging expression), a lightning bolt effect piece, a tiny figurine of Ten, 4 pairs of alternate hands,

As far as her articulation goes, it's quite similar to the SH Figuart Sailor Senshi I reviewed numerous times, with a head that can swivel on the neck as well as hinge up and down and even tilt side to side. shoulders that are on ball joints with the ability to move freely while also swiveling somewhat, the elbows bend and have some rotation, the wrists swivel as well as hinge in and out, there is a diaphragm joint and nothing else for the torso, likely because of how easier it is to make the joints work below the bosom rather than where the waist lies. The hips move around on ball joints, though it is advised to be careful without damaging the bikini bottom, they also swivel at the thighs, bend at the knees, hinge at the ankles as well as pivot somewhat. Attached to her flight stand, Lum can be posed in similar stances to the ones promoted on the box, such as her with a pointing left hand, her with a waving right hand as she looks to the side while little Ten flies with her on an additional piece meant for his part of the flight stand, and the figure can even be posed upside down on the base without messing up the balance if angled right. Ten has no articulation but is detailed as nicely as Lum is.

The lightning effect piece is much thicker and stiffer than the ones I've seen from the Power Rangers Lightning Collection, and you can add it onto her simply by removing one of her hands first before attaching it back on once the accessory slides onto the wrist area. Now you can give her unlimited power! Also one thing I want to mention is that she comes with an extra right hand, but it is only the more splayed-open right hand. And yes, the first pic has her with a clenched left fist while the accessory-holding hands that are otherwise useless can hold the bag somewhat.

For a size comparison, here she is in between figures that have yet to receive reviews, that being the Red Turbo Ranger and Clone Commander Jesse. She is definitely shorter than either character, though maybe that is scale-accurate since TJ and Jesse were both 6 feet tall while Lum was average female height in her series. Now there is another figure of Lum coming soon, that being the Buzzmod version based on the 2022 reboot. It might be more obtainable, but nearly $160 if we add tax and shipping, and the $15.50 non-refundable down payment makes things way pricier than what I paid for the Figma. If you want to get that one, it's your funeral. Otherwise, the Figma version is pretty good and does enough in terms of accessory count, though maybe another faceplate and some optional clothes she could wear would be nice. If only an Ataru Figma was made.

Final ranking: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ and a half out of ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
