Star Wars The Black Series Delta Squad 5-in-1 review

Star Wars may not be as great as it once was from 1997 through 2012, but at least Hasbro knows how to respect the Expanded Universe with the Black Series line. The Republic Commando game is one example of this, with its grim representation of a Commando's perspective the Clone Wars; between the suicide missions they're constantly involved in to the dark reality of losing a pod brother behind without any permission to rescue them, it's no wonder fans praise this classic game and find its story and characters superior to the Sad Batch. We received them little by little, but now I'm set to review them together in addition to doing them more justice than the Filoniverse cameos ever did. Let's dive in!

Let's first cover the blank version. Though labeled as part of The Bad Batch rather than Republic Commando, this armor debuted in the game as is and could fit in regardless. This is meant to represent a beefed-up Phase 1 Clone Trooper, with somewhat heftier armor as well as a glowing blue visor distinct from the black visors Clones usually have. They feel like the kind of comic redesigns you'd see in the 90s where bulkier proportions were a thing, and a designation like "Commando" adds to that extreme influence you'd see in boys toys. Though apart from the Power of the Force body builders, Star Wars remained consistent with its style in toy form. While pristine, the armor has some intentional scratches that likely come from the prior uses of the buck, aka Delta Squad.

The helmet, as mentioned before, is a more stylized take on the Phase 1 design, rounder and lacking the fin on top, this design could probably have elements of itself inspire the Phase 2 armor design. And I appreciate that the visor is in a metallic blue paint instead of a flat baby blue. Articulation consists of a double ball neck, shoulder rotation, outward arm movement, rotation at the elbow as well as a hinge, rotation at the wrists with a downward hinge for the right hand and an inward hinge for the left hand. There is a diaphragm joint, ball jointed hips that have limited range because the thigh armor scrapes onto the pelvis unless you use the thigh swivel, knees that swivel and hinges, and feet that hinge and pivot. He can at least maintain some battle poses with his back piece and rifle despite the box showing a more standard blaster.

Now to cover the real deals, here we have Boss on the left, representing the leader of the Delta Squad. He is your POV character in the game, and he is the only character voiced by Temuera Morrison to keep the squad distinct. The orange markings are distinct from someone like Commander Cody and the 212nd Clone Battalion. Sev, voiced by Johnathan Cook, was a gruffer Commando by comparison, being comparable to Raphael of the Ninja Turtles. The red marking on the helmet makes for a gritty trait of this Clone Commando, especially given his somewhat trigger-happy nature. It looks even more hardcore than that one dude who put blood on Finn's helmet in The Farce Awakens. His rifle is the same as the regular Commando.

Fixer, voiced by Andrew Chaikin, has a more formal color layout of green accents on the white armor to match his tech skills and stern behavior (mostly because of how distant he is). He shares the same blaster Boss wields. Scorch, voiced by Raphael Sbarge, is the more jovial member of the team, mostly obsessed with blowing things up and arguing with his pod brothers playfully. Though these figures do possess a bit of paint apps representing battle damage I kind of wish they'd look even dirtier than they currently are to match the game better. As it stands, they look closer to their TCW appearances, and considering how Scorch was treated in the Bad Batch, it's a case of the less said the better.

The reuse I have yet to own is the Battlefront 2 multi pack with a redecoed Battle Droid, with the paint apps now representing the Urban Fighter deco and training dummy, respectively. Idk if I would but it seems logical to buy even if you hate EA.

Time for a group shot! Though the articulation could be better and the decos grimier, Delta Squad makes for a badass set that no one should miss out on, especially with how rare it is to get merch of them compared to the constant Darth Vaders or Stormtroopers or whatever junk we get in Disney canon. Does make me wish we got Imperial Commando versions but I know there are Hot Toys versions of Scorch and the vanilla Commando.

Of course, here we have the regular version to join the gang because the vanilla's would sometimes tag along the squad.

CLONE COMMANDO
DELTA ⚡ SQUAD

Final ranking: ⭐⭐⭐ and a half out of ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
