Star Wars The Black Series Mace Windu review

Mace Windu is one of my favorite Star Wars characters of all time; he has an authoritative presence, doesn't fall back as a Jedi Master, and is played by the legendary Samuel L Jackson. Mace Windu especially stood out in Attack of the Clones, where he got to whip out his purple lightsaber and go against the ruthless bounty hunter in a fight that was kind of like Legend v. Legend. He may have not granted Anakin the rank of Master, but he is still a badass nonetheless. And as much as I try not to delve into politics, I'm going to say that Mace Windu's the perfect way to have a prominent black character in the Star Wars series; hear me out, but while Lando's a cool guy overall, he was kind of like a chill version of Han Solo. Finn would have been a great character in the Sequel Trilogy as a former Stormtrooper that eventually finds out he is Force-sensitive and finds a purpose in his new life, but Disney set him aside in favor of Rey, the woman he keeps shouting for. Mace Windu's still unbeaten in my eyes, and I think he deserves to say "Hail to the king, baby!" after beating Disney in a fight. Now let's review his figure!

Here he is in-hand, wearing his Jedi robe with the hood over his head (most notably seen at the end of The Phantom Menace). The robe itself is made of cloth goods, so while the effort is nice overall, it does make him look a little stuffier than the actual robes are. The execution itself is fine, but as we'll see, there is a way to unrobe him and reveal the rest of his outfit. As far as the sculpting of the inner outfit is concerned, it looks nicely done, while some paint apps to make it look more defined would help make the sculpting pop, I'm happy with how it turned out so-to-speak. There is at least some paint for the belt, with a bit of a light brown and some silver highlights. The pants that are obscured by the skirt-like part of his main outfit are white, and his boots are a darker brown than his belt. Yeah, I think the robe would look better if it wasn't in this scale.

Head sculpt is certainly accurate to the actor's likeness, what with the eyes and the sculpting making him look like Samuel L Jackson and not a generic likeness to him. I'm sure some would say it's not 100%, but just compare the earlier versions and come back to me. Sadly, mine does have a scuff on his forehead when I took an older pic. His articulation is generally good, even with the robes. His head and neck are on ball-joints (though the head is more expressive), the shoulders move front and back, in and out, they hinge in and out, swivel at the elbow, bend at the elbow, swivel at the wrists, and hinge in and out. There is a diaphragm joint, the hips move front and back, in and out, the thighs swivel, the knees bend at two points, and the feet hinge as well as pivot. If I'm going to be critical of the articulation, it's that the butterfly joints are limited in range and he has no double-jointed elbows. But he does have a purple lightsaber that is nicely painted at the hilt and has a sweet purple blade. You have no idea on how crazy my mind went when I saw it in action back then; while I knew that Jedi had blue and green lightsabers and Sith had red lightsabers, the fact that he had a purple lightsaber is great!

When you remove the robe, you have the inner outfit revealed a la Attack of the Clones. His articulation is easier to work with (though the flaps are a little hard to work with). Also revealed is the inner white of the outfit to go with the pants. So overall, Mace Windu's a great figure to own in the Black Series line if you never got the original; that being said, I do wish that he had more alternate hands as well as better arm movement; he could greatly benefit from those while justifying the price tag (the blister card used for The Phantom Menace is neat but doesn't justify paying $5 extra). Either way, he is undeniably a keeper if you get him at a lower price!

Final ranking: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ out of ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
