McFarlane DC Multiverse Green Lantern review

John Stewart is a case where sometimes, an alternate identity of a superhero may have more or equal popularity to that of the original incarnation or individual associated with the superhero role. It seems he and Hal tend to take turns with who gets to be the Green Lantern of focus in any DC fiction outside of the main universe. Hal got to be in the DCAMU, the Injustice series, and a movie starring Ryan Reynolds that gets ridiculed to this day, while John was given the DCAU, a reimagining as Diggle in the Arrowverse, and was intended to be in ZSJL before Warner Bros decided to cut him out for future plans that were never fulfilled thanks to a jammed gun. So with only a frame depicting Wayne T. Carr in his suit, let's pay tribute to the 2-year anniversary of Zack Snyder's Justice League (even if it's a few weeks early) with the next-best thing in the form of the McFarlane DC Multiverse Green Lantern figure based on the "standard" John Stewart release since WB doesn't want to make money off of the movie.

Here is Green Lantern in-hand, depicted in a more textured take of his traditional suit (since it was in the 2018 Justice League relaunch). Mostly made up of green and black, he has a simple yet effective appearance that doesn't really need any more additions apart from the linework that makes it look modern. The paint apps are nicely applied on, and it's good to see that with the chest emblem. He has no alternate hands, as he is stuck with the Lego-esque gripping hands. Luckily, his right hand has the signature ring while there are weapons that he will utilize. On his back is a hole we will get to in a moment. The proportions are generally nice but I feel the head might be a little too small and it sits on the neck a little too high.

Head sculpt is very well made even in spite of its scale, with the skin tone looking naturalistic, the eyes, eyebrows, hair, and lips painted properly, and even the eyes having a look of life put into them in a way older toys couldn't do right back then. While he doesn't look 1:1 to Wayne T. Carr, he still fits in well with the live-action style shown from the ZSJL figures. His articulation is the same as a standard McFarlane DC Multiverse figure. His head can move around on a ball joint fluidly, his shoulders move front and back, in and out (on both a butterfly joint and a shoulder swivel come hinge), bicep swivels, double-elbow bends, and wrists that swivel and hinge at two points (as well as having the wrists have the ability to both move in and out or up and down). There are two torso joints for the diaphragm joint as well as the abs, hips that move front and back, in and out, swivel at the thighs, bend at two points at the knees, and the ankles can swivel, hinge, and pivot. Topping off the articulation points are the toes that can bend! Oh and the bases are all the same.

He has a few accessories that make up for his lack of alternate hands. He has chest armor that is cast in translucent green PVC, and can somewhat stay in place thanks to the holes made for the peg and the emblem. However, it is moreso made for the surprisingly badass machine gun that also comes with a backpack to go with said accessory. It fits well with his power assets quite well.

There is another version of John Stewart worth going over. The hands are green and tbe rest of the shade may be different, but the figure is otherwise the same. Replacing the machine gun are two swords, which aren't as cool, but he does have the head and cape of Frost King in the Endless Winter series.

For a comparison with the Snyderverse characters, here he is next to Tactical Batman and Black Suit Superman from Zack Snyder's Justice League. He may not be made specifically for the Snyderverse, but I do think he fits in much better than weirdo designs like Killer Croc and King Shark (coincidentally both are from Suicide Squad movies). So overall, this guy is one I'd recommend, whether it's this or Endless Winter, though I prefer the regular release because the machine gun is too cool not to get.

Final ranking: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ out of ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
