Marvel Legends M.O.D.O.K & Kang the Conquerer review

Once upon a time, there was a guy whose head blew up like a whoopie cushion and later had to sit on a floating toilet for his dear life. Meanwhile, we got another guy who basically knows how to conquer, and both of these characters have been against our heroes, the Avengers, for quite a long time. And what better way to celebrate that fact than talking about how mediocre MODOK was in the MCU while Kang went from being a conqueror to being incarcerated. But with all that said, I got these two in the same lot as I did with Ant-Man and the Wasp, which the seller brought together to tie-in with Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, but here,  we get the comic iterations that were made more recently. Let's see if they're worth obtaining years after their release.

Let's focus on M.O.D.O.K first. Oh wait, he comes disassembled right out of the box. It's kind of satisfying actually putting him together, especially since it feels like a model kit but without the sprues that are immediately discarded. So you have the swivel, the front and back halves of the body, two faceplates, the upper portion of the boost, the bottom portion of the boost, two hands, and the hair.

Now that he's assembled, I got to say he looks pretty good for a Legends figure, even though the price he went for was a little higher than usual considering he is a Deluxe figure. I have a feeling he was originally a BAF that was later made into a Deluxe figure given how he's more of a prominent character than most BAFs of late (Puff Adder and Ch'od come to mind). Hasbro did a great job with this guy, using metallic plastic to make the chair look golden with accompanying panel-line paintwork that helps make the figure pop nicely. The face is also detailed gorgeously for an ugly guy, with the eyes and mouth having their crisp paint apps on top of the skin looking organic and layered thanks to the flesh tone paint added onto the plastic. There is a wash applied to the hair, but the limbs are normal purple plastic. The effect part transitioning from red to orange is neat, too.

His articulation includes arms that swivel, hinge up and down, rotate and bend at the elbows, swivel, and hinge at the wrists, and legs that are ball-jointed while the kees are double-jointed and the feet hinge as well as pivot. For a size comparison, here he is next to an image of his MCU iteration, who he wishes to not see anymore, so yeah Hasbro, don't bother with Darran who is a dick in addition to being a joke like Phase 4 and almost all of the MCU of late. Stick with this figure instead; he's great and is worth buying even if he is kind of expensive. I got mine in a lot along with Ant-Man, Wasp, and Kang.

And now we have Kang the Conquerer. This guy is a brand new mold, fitting for his aesthetics, with the green and purple color combo that is common in the Marvel universe (Hulk, Green Goblin, etc) that is made further unique with his blue face and the purple helmet he wears. The outfit has some great sculptwork that depicts the creases of the fabric as the upper portion of it goes down to his waist, where the belt separates it and the small skirt he has. There is no paint on either the tunic or his leg and forearm armor, but that's to be expected with Hasbro being Hasbro. I do find the forearms a bit problematic, though.  While they are accurate, they feel rather undersized, and one of them broke on me, so I had to glue it back.

His head sculpt is nicely made and has a good use of blue paint apps with the darker blue for his face and the lighter blue for the trim on the helmet's opening and the lines on the face, with no misaligned paint apps or sloppiness in sight. Well done, Hasbro. His articulation has a limited neck hinge with normal head-turning, shoulders move front and back, in and out, the elbows swivel and hinge as with MODOK, the wrists swivel and hinge (the left hand holding his gun is able to hinge up and down rather than in and out). There is a single diaphragm joint that swivels and crunches, hips that move front and back as well as in and out while the thighs swivel; the knees and ankles work the same as with MODOK.

He doesn't come with a piece of Joe Fixit (which sucks because I want to start making that BAF) but he unusually comes with the hand effect piece and the Tesseract, which likely came with either an MCU Loki or a Red Skull. And here he is with the High Evolutionary, both of which are depicted as the newest MCU villains that people suddenly give a shit about even if they never cared about them to begin with, but that's the current trend of capeshit for you! But yeah, this guy us also pretty good even in spite of that one forearm issue, and I should mention that don't expect your copy of him to come with the Tesseract or the effect part.
