Transformers Studio Series Gamer Edition Sideswipe review

For many, the Gamer Edition is pretty lackluster compared to the offerings on regular Studio Series and the 86 titles. The biggest factors include the lack of consistent engineering quality that would put these on-par with said sublines, on top of feeling quite cheap with the reliance on ball joints despite being more G1-based. Sideswipe seemed to be yet another poor addition to a generally okay subline, but now that we have a proper chance to look at him in-hand, let's see if he's worth it. I already know he's better than the FOC Deluxe, so that's a positive start!

Here we have Sideswipe in his vehicle mode, which is a Cybertronic car that matches his appearance in the game. Remember how Siege made the G1 Lamborghini a bit more alien? This design goes an extra mile in straying away from looking remotely Earthly without bordering on the Movie aesthetic. While the red is obviously G1 influenced, the silver stripes and maybe the front and "windows" evoke the Corvette Stingray Concept. Not exactly there, but it kind of is in my eyes. I also love that the wheels are painted out with the Energon-powered line work throughout. The altmodes for the Autobots are generally good, and this is no exception.

The gun can be pegged on top of the roof, which is usual for the line but fitting since the Transformers fought in vehicle modes when needed.

For a size comparison, here he is with Optimus and Bumblebee from last year, and he's able to fit in generally well both of his teammates. At the very least, that is something we can all expect Hasbro to get right for the line.

Transformation is fairly involved, with a difficulty level comparable to at least Optimus while not being as annoying as Bumblebee. Instead of parts clashing together, we gave shoulder pieces that tab into the slots within the wheels while the back of the legs have panels that keep out the hollow spaces. Very appreciative. And the robot mode honestly looks better in-hand than initial pictures made it out to be. While the upper body is bulkier than the legs, it at least befits Sideswipe's usual design traits (and is not as grossly disproportionate as the FOC Deluxe from a decade ago). It appears my copy has a missing paint app on the left arm, though I should check my other copy. Yes, I own two copies: one from Amazon and another I got earlier from a Singaporean seller via a bidding auction that was supposed to pop up before the Amazon copy even though it arrived after it. Yeah. One genuine issue I vave with the figure would be small the head is as well as how flat the feet are, so the proportions aren't quite perfect. I also wish the back kibble would be better integrated with the rest of the robot mode though it could be worse.

The aforementioned head sculpt is smaller than I'd like, and the mouth is faintly sculpted, but his eyes are thankfully blue instead of soulless, dead black like on the FOC Deluxe. His articulation consists of ball joints for the neck, shoulders, and hips, swivels for the biceps, waist, and thighs, and hinges for the elbows, knees, and feet. As with previous Gamer Edition figures, you can swap the right forearm out with the photon burst rifle showcased earlier.

The spoiler can be removed since it is on a 5mm peg, and you can put it on the right arm's port if you so choose. The gun can also be held loosely on its tab if you want a handheld weapon. Neither is intentional but still neat to try out.

For a size comparison, here he is with Bumblebee in robot mode. Both figures should be at an accurate size since Bumblebee wasn't as undersized as in G1 itself. Makes me wonder who else will be a Deluxe in terms of the Autobots.

And why not, here he is with his brother from another universe, Sunstreaker. Both figures were in the same wave, anyhow, so pairing them up is fine with me. Honestly, you can easily have Beewun Sunstreaker on your WFC/FOC display and nobody would mind that much apart from the distinct facial aesthetics.

Now let's point and laugh at the original FOC Sideswipe retool that was previously used on Jazz, aka one of the worst Generations figures of all time! The Gamer Edition figure ain't perfect, but he is still miles better than this piece of crap (whose cannon is better off given to Beast Hunters Prime if you ask me and Jcc2224).

Final ranking: ⭐⭐⭐ and a half out of ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
